TSX Closes Flat; Barrick Gold, Manulife Among Stocks To Shine
Canadian stocks, poised for their biggest weekly gain since July 2010, swung between gains and losses as energy shares rose and gold producers retreated after an increase in U.S. retail sales, Bloomberg reported late Friday afternoon.
It said Baytex Energy Corp., a western Canadian oil and gas producer, gained 6% as oil advanced as much as 1.9% in New York. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX.TO), the world's largest gold producer by market value, fell 0.8% as gold dropped for a second day from a record. Manulife Financial Corp. (MFC.TO), Canada's biggest insurer, increased 1.1% after analysts at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Barclays Plc raised their ratings on the shares.
