TSX Adds to Early Gains As Miners, Telecom Continue to Climb

The TSX was ahead by 53 points in the mid-afternoon session after adding to earlier gains as mining and telecom stocks continued to climb.

Oil moved into the positive territory, with the dollar slipping, following soft ADP job report. However, data also revealed that jobless claims fell to near a 43-year low and have now been below 300,000, indicating a healthy labor market. Gold and silver also benefited, rising 1.5% to US$1,182.60/ounce and 0.4% to US$16.61/ounce, respectively.

Mining and telecom advanced 2.3% and 0.7%, respectively. On the negative side, energy shed 0.4% while healthcare retreated by 0.8%.

Total volume traded was 289.4 million shares. Bombardier (BBD-B.TO) was the most actively traded stock.
