TSX Up 53 Points at Midday; Healthcare, Financials Still In The Lead
The TSX was ahead by 53 points at midday after adding to earlier gains, as healthcare and financial stocks continued to rise.
Sentiments were boosted by forecast-beating earnings of JPMorgan Chase & Co, the biggest U.S bank by assets. The good news was a breather for investors, who worried so much about the global economy after the shocking Brexit vote, the lingering oil supply glut, and some poor data from major economies.
Healthcare was still the strongest group, up 1.7%, as Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX.T) climbed 6% after confirming that the sale of former CEO J. Michael Pearson's holdings in the company is not a reflection of the ongoing viability of Valeant. Financials came second, advancing 0.8%. Materials and energy were up 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively.
Total volume traded so far stood at 174.1 million shares. Dalradian Resources (DNA.TO) was the most actively traded stock.
