The TSX rose 42 points at midday, boosted mostly by resource and financial shares, although gains were limited in the energy group due to the persistent weakness in oil prices .
Reports said OPEC's production was at record levels, while U.S. drillers added oil rigs for a fourth consecutive week. At last check, Brent was barely changed at US$44.73/barrel, while the WTI slipped 0.4% to US$42.95/barrel.
Materials and energy were up 2.1% and 0.3%, respectively, while financials edged higher by 0.4%. Weighing on the broader index were utilities and healthcare, down 0.6% and 0.5%, respectively.
Total volume traded so far stood at 150.9 million shares. Baytex Energy (BTE.TO) was the most actively traded stock.
