The Toronto stock market was lower in afternoon trading as investors sought direction with major U.S. exchanges closed for the day as Hurricane Sandy approaches.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index was down 34 points to session lows of 12,266.
The bulk of the TSX's sub-sectors were in negative territory, including industrials, materials, financials and energy. Information technology and utilities were higher.
Heavily traded CGI Group (GIB-A.TO) and Bombardier (BBD-B.TO) both added about 0.3%. Progress Energy (PRQ.TO) rose 7% after Petronas said it was extending its takeover bid for Progress in hopes of winning approval from Ottawa.
