The Toronto stock market was modestly higher in afternoon trading after Statistics Canada reported 40,000 new jobs last month and the unemployment rate dropped to a four-year low of 7.1%.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index was 18 points higher at 12,488, retreating from day highs of 12,503.

Tech, energy and financial issues were higher, offset by losses in the materials sector as the price of gold declined.

Heavily traded Manulife Financial (MFC.TO) gained 1% while Sprott Power (SPZ.TO) added 3%.
