Thursday Sector Leaders: Utilities, Materials

The best performing sector as of midday Thursday is the Utilities sector, losing just 1.2%. Within that group, SCANA Corp (Symbol: SCG) and CenterPoint Energy, Inc (Symbol: CNP) are two large stocks leading the way, with SCG not showing much of a loss and CNP down 0.5%. Among utilities ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLU), which is down 1.1% on the day, and up 1.50% year-to-date. SCANA Corp, meanwhile, is up 22.91% year-to-date, and CenterPoint Energy, Inc is up 0.92% year-to-date. Combined, SCG and CNP make up approximately 3.0% of the underlying holdings of XLU.

The next best performing sector is the Materials sector, losing just 1.7%. Among large Materials stocks, Newmont Mining Corp (Symbol: NEM) and Avery Dennison Corp (Symbol: AVY) are the most notable, with NEM showing a gain of 0.2% and AVY down 0.5%. One ETF closely tracking Materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLB ), which is down 1.3% in midday trading, and down 17.54% on a year-to-date basis. Newmont Mining Corp , meanwhile, is down 6.29% year-to-date, and Avery Dennison Corp, is down 22.75% year-to-date. Combined, NEM and AVY make up approximately 4.7% of the underlying holdings of XLB.
