Thursday Sector Laggards: Utilities, Financial

In afternoon trading on Thursday, Utilities stocks are the worst performing sector, showing a 0.5% loss. Within that group, Duke Energy Corp (Symbol: DUK) and Edison International (Symbol: EIX) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 1.8% and 1.6%, respectively. Among utilities ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLU), which is down 0.8% on the day, and up 3.59% year-to-date. Duke Energy Corp, meanwhile, is down 0.26% year-to-date, and Edison International is up 10.86% year-to-date. Combined, DUK and EIX make up approximately 10.8% of the underlying holdings of XLU.

The next worst performing sector is the Financial sector, up 0.4%. Among large Financial stocks, Allstate Corp (Symbol: ALL) and Anthem Inc (Symbol: ANTM) are the most notable, showing a loss of 6.2% and 3.4%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Financial stocks is the Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLF ), which is up 0.1% in midday trading, and down 4.49% on a year-to-date basis. Allstate Corp, meanwhile, is down 12.94% year-to-date, and Anthem Inc is up 19.35% year-to-date. ALL makes up approximately 1.1% of the underlying holdings of XLF.
