Thursday Sector Laggards: Technology & Communications, Healthcare

In afternoon trading on Thursday, Technology & Communications stocks are the worst performing sector, showing a 1.3% loss. Within the sector, Seagate Technology plc (Symbol: STX) and IPG Photonics Corp (Symbol: IPGP) are two of the day's laggards, showing a loss of 6.6% and 5.3%, respectively. Among technology ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLK), which is down 1.3% on the day, and up 12.07% year-to-date. Seagate Technology plc, meanwhile, is up 32.48% year-to-date, and IPG Photonics Corp is up 15.36% year-to-date. Combined, STX and IPGP make up approximately 0.4% of the underlying holdings of XLK.

The next worst performing sector is the Healthcare sector, showing a 0.7% loss. Among large Healthcare stocks, Nektar Therapeutics (Symbol: NKTR) and ABIOMED, Inc. (Symbol: ABMD) are the most notable, showing a loss of 12.1% and 3.4%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Healthcare stocks is the Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLV ), which is down 0.2% in midday trading, and up 2.32% on a year-to-date basis. Nektar Therapeutics, meanwhile, is down 11.69% year-to-date, and ABIOMED, Inc. is up 111.53% year-to-date. Combined, NKTR and ABMD make up approximately 0.8% of the underlying holdings of XLV.
