Thursday Sector Laggards: Energy, Financial

In afternoon trading on Thursday, Energy stocks are the worst performing sector, showing a 1.0% loss. Within that group, Apache Corp (Symbol: APA) and Occidental Petroleum Corp (Symbol: OXY) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 6.2% and 4.4%, respectively. Among energy ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLE), which is down 1.0% on the day, and up 4.87% year-to-date. Apache Corp, meanwhile, is up 4.23% year-to-date, and Occidental Petroleum Corp is up 7.52% year-to-date. Combined, APA and OXY make up approximately 5.2% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next worst performing sector is the Financial sector, showing a 0.2% loss. Among large Financial stocks, Assurant Inc (Symbol: AIZ) and Prudential Financial Inc (Symbol: PRU) are the most notable, showing a loss of 1.9% and 1.5%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Financial stocks is the Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLF ), which is down 0.5% in midday trading, and up 2.34% on a year-to-date basis. Assurant Inc, meanwhile, is up 5.94% year-to-date, and Prudential Financial Inc, is down 11.48% year-to-date. Combined, AIZ and PRU make up approximately 1.4% of the underlying holdings of XLF.
