Thursday Sector Laggards: Energy, Consumer Products

In afternoon trading on Thursday, Energy stocks are the worst performing sector, showing a 1.4% loss. Within that group, Range Resources Corp (Symbol: RRC) and Chesapeake Energy Corp. (Symbol: CHK) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 5.2% and 3.4%, respectively. Among energy ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLE), which is down 1.3% on the day, and down 3.84% year-to-date. Range Resources Corp, meanwhile, is down 8.92% year-to-date, and Chesapeake Energy Corp., is down 13.03% year-to-date. Combined, RRC and CHK make up approximately 1.1% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next worst performing sector is the Consumer Products sector, showing a 0.6% loss. Among large Consumer Products stocks, Coty, Inc. (Symbol: COTY) and Mondelez International Inc (Symbol: MDLZ) are the most notable, showing a loss of 5.2% and 4.2%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Consumer Products stocks is the iShares U.S. Consumer Goods ETF ( IYK ), which is down 0.4% in midday trading, and up 5.45% on a year-to-date basis. Coty, Inc., meanwhile, is up 2.35% year-to-date, and Mondelez International Inc, is down 1.93% year-to-date. MDLZ makes up approximately 3.0% of the underlying holdings of IYK.
