Texas InstrumentsTXN or TI recently launched LMG5200 GaN FET power stage, the industry's first 80-V, 10-A integrated gallium nitride (GaN) field-effect transistor (FET) power-stage model. Samples of the GaN power stage are available for purchase in the TI Store. The LMG5200 costs $50 each with a maximum buy of 10 units.
The 80-V half-bridge LMG5200 GaN FET power stage comprises a high-frequency driver and two GaN FETs in a half-bridge configuration all packed together in an 6-mm by 8-mm easy-to-design quad flat no-leads (QFN) package. The QFN package eliminates the underfill requirement to tackle high-voltage spacing concerns, enhancing board manufacturability and reducing cost. Therefore, QFN enables simplified layout and manufacturability.
GaN solutions offered by TI enhance performance and density for switching power converters. The GaN technology basically is popular for its efficiency in power conversion, especially at higher frequencies, which in turn helps to save costs.
It also supplies the industry's cutting edge power GaN components and user-friendly modules that are compatible with next generation system requirements. It helps in reduction of switching losses in hard-switched converters. It also boosts switching frequency in hard-switched and soft-switched converters while reducing or eliminating heat.
The LMG5200 GaN FET power stage will help speed up market adaptability of next-generation GaN power-conversion solutions that offer enhanced energy density and efficiency in compact, high-frequency and high voltage industrial and telecom applications, thus, strengthening their demand.
Therefore, the launch will enhance Texas Instruments' differentiated product pipeline and is expected to improve market share for TI, thereby boosting revenues. However, Texas Instruments operates in an intensely competitive industry and companies such as Broadcom BRCM and Analog Devices ADI can pose stiff competition.
Texas Instruments currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). A better-ranked stock in the industry is STMicroelectronics NV STM , sporting a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
