Texas Instruments' 700-V Switcher to Cut Quiescent Power - Analyst Blog

Texas Instruments ( TXN ) recently launched the 700-V switcher, which sets a new benchmark in the industry for quiescent current requirements. The switcher has quiescent current of less than 100 uA only, half of the power required by prevailing solutions.

To improve the general energy efficiency of the perpetual non-isolated power systems, a 700-V power MOSFET and high-voltage current source is combined in a UCC28880 controller. It generates an output current of up to 100 mA.

Perpetual non-isolated power systems like smart meters, home automation equipment and white goods can use TI's latest high-voltage switcher to curtail energy consumption.

Apart from improved efficiency and system performance, the high-voltage switcher cuts down system cost and reduces the amount of power supply needed. It can be used to build different types of converter topologies, without increasing the number of external components.

Besides this, the switcher is designed to perform under excessive currents. This increases the reliability of the high V switcher. Installed with the hysteretic re-start for safe operation, the device provides over-temperature protection.

The UCC28880 switcher with combined 700-V FET is available in a 7-pin SOIC package. It costs about $0.55 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Texas Instruments currently sports a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Investors can also consider Intel ( INTC ) which currently sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), NVIDIA Corp ( NVDA ) which sports a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) or even a much smaller company like Mercadolibre, Inc. ( MELI ), which has a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
