Stocks Firmer But Surrender Stronger Gains, Leaving Indices At Key Supports

Stocks end a touch higher but off the day's best levels as lingering concerns about the direction of U.S. interest rates, along with the impact the stronger dollar will have on corporate profits, compromised today's fragile gains. Those gains came in the wake of Tuesday's 300-plus point rout in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Support at the 100-day moving averages for the Dow and S&P 500 look to have halted further selling pressure for now, but both indices finish near their lows of the day in sympathy with losses in the energy complex.
