Stock Market Index ETFs Mixed; Oil Surges, Gold Slips

Stock market index ETFs opened narrowly mixed Thursday as oil stocks surged and gold eased.

SPDR S&P 500 ( SPY ) was down 0.1%, while PowerShares QQQ ( QQQ ) was up 0.1% and SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DIA ) was up 0.2%.

U.S. Oil Fund ( USO ), which tracks the spot price of West Texas intermediate crude oil, leapt 2.1%. Crude oil for March delivery jumped $1.03 to $53.79 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The rise came despite reports that U.S. oil inventories rose by 2.9 million barrels last week to 488.3 million barrels.

Energy Select Sector SPDR ( XLE ), which tracks energy stocks, was flat.

Select Sector SPDRs with gains of 0.1% to 0.3% included Consumer Discretionary, Materials, Finance and Industrial.

IShares Russell 2000, which tracks small-cap stocks, was down 0.5%, giving back some of its 2.7% rally the past two days. The ETF is forming a flat base and is within 1% of its all-time high.

Gold Shares (GLD) was down 1.1%, while PowerShares U.S. dollar Bullish was 0.8% higher.
