Major stock index ETFs ended trading Thursday slightly down, but holding close to record highs.
Gold, energy, real estate, utilities and technology were all higher, but energy led other sectors lower.
SPDR S&P 500 ( SPY ) was down 0.1%, but near its all-time high of 235.14 reached Wednesday and well above its 50-day moving average. PowerShares QQQ ( QQQ ) was flat and SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DIA ) was up 0.1%.
SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) was up 0.5%, on its way to a third straight gain. The ETF tracks the price of gold bullion. It's up 7% this year, but remains 10% below its 52-week high reached in June. The shift to an environment of rising interest rates has put downward pressure on gold as investors see better value in interest-bearing securities like bonds.
VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ( GDX ), which tracks mining stocks, jumped 1.2%. Top holding Barrick Gold (ABX) leapt 6%.
VanEck Vectors Junior Gold Miners (GDXJ) rose 1.5%.
