Coffee company Starbucks CorporationSBUX recently opened a store in the Jamaican neighborhood of Queens, NY. The store is a first of its kind and offers in-store training, employment and educational opportunities to the youth in the neighborhood.
In addition to providing extraordinary Starbucks retail experience, the new store will impart the same world-class customer service and retail skills training to neighborhood kids that Starbucks employee receive.
Starbucks will also leverage the existing programs that help young people connect with the internships, apprenticeships and jobs. Starbucks intends to open similar stores in at least 15 such communities in the U.S by 2018. Each of these stores will hire 20-25 people. The next store is expected to be opened in the West Florissant neighborhood of Ferguson, MO. The company also intends to engage the local non profit organizations to provide training.
This initiative is the part of the coffee company's 10,000 Opportunity Youth Initiative, which was started in Jul 2015. The initiative aims to hire apprentices, interns and employees aged between 16 and 24 years by 2018. These positions will include both full time as well as part time jobs.
