Slow docket before Fed minutes

No economic reports are scheduled for today, but the calendar will grow more active in the next week.

Tomorrow brings European retail sales early, weekly mortgage applications, and crude oil inventories. The Federal Reserve is also in the news, with governor Jerome Powell making a speech on monetary policy and minutes due from the last meeting.

Rite Aid also reports earnings before the opening bell tomorrow, followed in the afternoon by Alcoa and Bed Bath & Beyond.

Select retailers announce monthly same-store sales Thursday. Initial jobless and natural-gas inventories also come out in the morning, while Chinese lending and inflation data is due late in the evening. Walgreen Boots issues quarterly results in the pre-market.

Friday is quiet, with export and import prices as the only items. Next week's agenda is busier, with a heavy flow of corporate results and several important economic headlines.
