Consumer shares were flat to lower in pre-market trade on Tuesday.

In consumer sector news, General Motors ( GM ) shares dipped in Tuesday's pre-market session after the automaker filed 2,004 reports tied to injuries or deaths from accidents in vehicles that were recalled for ignition-related problems, Bloomberg reports.

GM trades in a 52-week range of $31.13 to $41.85.

And, Dollar General Corporation ( DG ) has reported Q1 EPS of $0.72, up from $0.67 per share in Q1 2013 but missing analyst estimates of $0.73 . Revenues of $4.52 billion for the quarter were up from $4.23 billion in Q1 2013 and was about in line with analyst projections of $4.56 billion.

Same-store sales increased 1.5% resulting from increases in both customer traffic and average transaction amount.
