In corporate news, Wi-Lan and consumer electronics firm Aluratek, Inc. have renewed a patent license agreement first signed five years ago, the two companies said on Thursday.

Under the agreement, California-based Aluratek receives a multi-year running royalty license to certain wireless technologies. Financial terms of the deal were not released.

Ottawa-based Wi-LAN first signed a patent license agreement with Aluratek in Q1 2009.

Wi-LAN also renewed a license agreement for Wi-Fi-related technologies, signed in the first quarter of 2009, with an undisclosed company. The identity of the licensee and terms of the renewal agreement are confidential.

On the other hand, media reports on Thursday said that BlackBerry's Z30 smartphone has won the "consumer product of the year" award from the Best in Biz 2014 Awards International committee, consisting of analysts and members of the business, finance, and technology media. Last month, the Z30 smartphone also took home the Red Dot Product Design Award.
