Sector Update: Energy Shares Swing Lower; Crude Oil Futures Back Off Session Highs

Energy shares have downshifted with the the broader market, while crude oil is still positive, trading above $85 a barrel.

Light, sweet crude for October delivery is trading up 0.2% at $85.58 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil is up 1.06% to $2.97 a gallon while natural gas is down 1.1% to $3.94 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) is down 0.3% to $33.32. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) is down 1.3% at $9.87.

In mid-day news, shares of ConocoPhilips ( COP ) are down after Reuters reported that the U.S. oil major is evaluating the impact of its oil spill in China's Bohai Bay. COP said it has not yet received any claims for the incident.

State media reports indicated that fisherman in the area were set to sue COP for killing large numbers of scallops in the bay.

COP shares are down 0.75%, or $0.49, to $65.22.
