Sector Update: Energy Shares Mixed Pre-Market as Crude Futures Drop

Energy shares were mixed in pre-market trade Friday as crude oil futures slipped.

Light, sweet crude oil for September delivery was down 0.09% at $101.98 per barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was up up 0.38% at $2.89 per gallon while natural gas was down 0.47% at $3.83 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was flat at $37.82. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) was down 0.85% at $21.00.

In other energy news, LyondellBasell ( LYB ) reported Q2 earnings and sales that exceeded analysts' expectations but warned that results in Q3 will be negatively impacted by the delayed start-up of its La Porte ethylene plant.

The chemical company said earnings from continuing operations rose to $2.22 per diluted share from $1.60 the year earlier, exceeding the $1.92 average estimate from analysts polled by Capital IQ. Sales rose to $12.1 billion from $11.1 billion, also coming in ahead of the $11.4 billion consensus estimate.
