Energy shares are mixed to lower in late trading as crude oil futures gave up earlier gains to close below $85 a barrel.

Crude oil for January delivery finished down $0.02, or 0.001%, at $84.88 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was up 0.36% to $2.37 a gallon while natural gas rose 0.84%, to $3.83 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) is up 0.08% to $36.50. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) is up 0.54% to $5.54.

In late-session energy sector news, Anadarko Petroleum ( APC ) discovered oil at a well off the coast of Sierra Leone, reports Bloomberg.

The well, located 15,950 feet down in 5,250 feet of water found light, sweet crude along with some lower-grade oil, the report said. Anadarko was a minority stakeholder in the ruptured BP ( BP ) well in the Gulf of Mexico.

Anadarko shares are up 1.09%, or $0.70, to $64.68.
