Sector Update: Energy Shares Mixed in Late Trading; Crude Oil Futures Advance

Energy shares are mixed in late-session trading while crude oil futures managed to finish higher, near $87 a barre;l.

Light, sweet crude oil for October delivery finished up 1.4% to $86.89 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was down 2.2% to $2.94 a gallon while natural gas was up 0.81% to $3.84 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) is up 0.87% to $33.58. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) is down 1.34% to $9.54.

In late-session energy news, shares of Chevron Corp. ( CVX ) are higher while MarketWatch reports that the U.S. oil major has been dealt a setback in its legal wrangling over environmental damage in Ecuador.

A preliminary injunction blocking an $18 billion judgement against the firm was vacated by the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the report said.

Chevron shares are down 0.1%, or $0.10, to $98.59.

Meanwhile, shares of Noble Energy ( NE ) are down as Deutsche Bank initiated coverage of the company with a Buy rating. Also, officials in Cyprus said the company started drilling an exploration well south of the island, MarketWatch reported. That comes despite protests from Turkey.

Noble shares are down 0.2% to $34.58.
