Energy shares are lower as crude oil futures waffle between gains and losses through the morning to trade just higher at mid-day.

Light, sweet crude for October delivery is trading up up 3.9% to $89.34 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil is down 0.81% to $3.05 a gallon while natural gas is up 1.83% to $4.01 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) is up 0.03% to $34.70. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) is up 1.71% to $10.10.

In mid-day energy news, Statoil ( STO ) is reportedly upgraded to "buy" from "neutral" at UBS. Shares closed $23.17. Statoil shares are up 1.51%.

Also, Exxon Mobil ( XOM ) is reportedly upgraded to "buy" from "neutral" at UBS based on relative valuation. Price target remains $90. Shares are up 0.08% to $73.71.
