Sector Update: Energy Shares Keep Gains Through Session's Half; ConocoPhillips Says China Spill Cleaned Up

Energy shares kept gains through the morning into the session's half even as crude oil futures traded near the flat line, near $89 a barrel.

Light, sweet crude oil for October delivery traded down 0.08% to $88.81 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was up 0.22% to $3.07 a gallon while natural gas was up 3.58% to $4.04 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) is up 0.03% to $34.45. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) is up 3.15% to $10.16.

In mid-day energy news, shares of ConocoPhillips ( COP ) are higher as the Associated Press reports the U.S.-based oil major says it has completed cleaning virtually all oil and drilling mud released into Bohai Bay in China.

The company says that it has met a deadline to have the oil cleaned up by Wednesday.Â

COP shares are up 0.6%, or $0.41, to $68.25.
