Sector Update: Energy Shares Higher at Session's Half; Crude Gains 0.2%

Energy shares are higher in mid-day trading while crude oil futures advance to top $100 a barrel at the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Light, sweet crude oil for January delivery traded up 0.23% to $100.42 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was up 0.55% to $2.98 a gallon while natural gas was down 1.54% to $3.59 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) is up 0.05% to $38.63. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) is down 1.5% to $7.90.

In mid-day energy news, shares of Chevron ( CVX ) are higher while Bloomberg reports that two people taken by gunman at an offshore oil field last month have been let go. The two workers were taken from a supply ship, the report said.

CVX shares are down 0.06%, or $0.09, to $101.72.

Meanwhile, BP ( BP ) ADRs are higher while the company's Chairman, Carl-Henric Svanberg, will be taking a non-executive position at Volvo AB.

BP shares are up 1.22% to $43.27.
