Energy shares are trading higher as crude futures finished up even after trading lower for much of the regular session and the dollar logged gains against foreign currencies.

Crude oil for January delivery finished up $0.19, or 0.2%, to $89.38 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was down 0.4% to $2.47 a gallon while natural gas rose 3.6%, to $4.50 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) is just lower, down 0.03% to $38.30. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) is up 4.21%% to $6.19.

The U.S Dollar Index (DXY) is up 0.25% to $79.58.

In late-session energy-sector news, shares of Exxon Mobil ( XOM ) are up fractionally following an earlier Reuters report that production from the oil major could be dinged slightly from planned maintenance work on a 192,500 barrel-per-day Louisiana refinery.

The work will last a couple of weeks, according to a quote from a refinery spokesman.

Exxon Mobil shares are up 0.42%, or $0.30, to $71.49.

Meanwhile, shares of Massey Energy ( MEE ) are off session highs but still moderately higher on expectations that the coal producer may be considering an acquisition, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Also adding to the mix is Friday's news that President Baxter Phillips Jr. will succeed Don Blankenship as chief executive officer after he retires on Dec. 31.

Massey shares are up 2.62%, or $1.32, to $51.74.
