Sector Update: Energy Shares Higher; Crude Oil Futures Finish Above $89 a Barrel

Energy shares are higher as crude oil futures finish above $89 a barrel by the close at the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Light, sweet crude oil for October delivery finished up 0.6% to $89.40 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was up 2.68% to $3.02 a gallon while natural gas was down 3.84% to $3.88 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) up 0.93% to $34.66. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) is down 3.54% to $9.80.

In late-session energy news, shares of ConocoPhillips ( COP ) are higher although Reuters reports that China's State Oceanic Administration found indications that there are still unplugged leaks in Bohai Bay in Northern China. The agency is urging COP to step up cleanup efforts from its spill there earlier this year.

COP shares are up 0.86%, or $0.57, to $66.54.
