Energy shares are higher in mid-day trading while crude oil futures gain to trade at almost $97 a barrel.

Light, sweet crude is up $2.92 to $96.80 a barrel, according to a quote from the CME Group.

Meanwhile, shares of ConocoPhillips ( COP ) are higher while The Wall Street Journal reports that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issed a permit to the oil major to allow development of the first commercial oil well in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska.

COP shares are up 2.5% to $69.51.
