Sector Update: Energy Shares End Lower; Crude Keeps Some Gains

Energy shares closed down although crude oil futures kept some positive territory, albeit still trading below $94 a barrel. Oil for January delivery climbed 35 cents, or 0.4%, to settle at $93.88 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange

In energy news, shares of Duke Energy, ( DUK ) Wre down after Duke-American Transmission Co., a joint venture of Duke Energy and American Transmission Co., acquired the Zephyr Power Transmission Project. DUK will continue the design and development of the proposed 950-mile transmission line that would deliver wind energy generated in eastern Wyoming to California and the southwestern United States. DUK shares were down 0.2% to $20.97.

Meanwhile, Exxon Mobil ( XOM ) shares are down as Bloomberg reports that the U.S. oil major appointed HSBC Holdings ( HBC ) to advise on a $5 billion elastomers project at Jubail in Saudi Arabia, the Middle East Economic Digest reported.

XOM shares are down 0.8%, or $0.63, to $79.53.
