Sector Update: Energy Shares Downshift; Crude Futures Under $96 a Barrel

Energy shares are lower as the broader market turned down ahead of the closing bell while crude oil futures moved under $96 a barrel.

Light, sweet crude oil for January delivery traded down 0.3% to $95.85 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was down 0.9% to $2.93 a gallon while natural gas was up 1.3% to $3.50 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) is down 0.27% to $37.08. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) is up 0.38% to $8.02.

In late-session, National Oilwell Varco ( NOV ) shares are up 1.1% while Tidewater ( TDW ) gained 1.3%. EnBridge ( ENB ) shares are lower as The Wall Street Journal mentions the company's Northern Gateway Pipeline will bring oil from Alberta to the coast of British Columbia for Export to Asia.

ENB shares are down 3.1%, or $1.07, to $33.37.
