Sector Update: Energy Shares Down in Mid-Day Trading; Crude Futures Slip Below $87 a Barrel

Energy shares are lower in mid-day trading as crude oil pares prior-session gains to trade under $87 a barrel.

Light, sweet crude oil for October delivery traded down 2.19% to $86.96 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was down 0.89% to $3.02 a gallon while natural gas was down 3.41% to $3.91 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) is down 1.86% to $33.83. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) is down 3.44% to $9.83.

In mid-day energy news, ADRs of BP ( BP ) are down 3.04% to $36.64 after Halliburton ( HAL ) says it is filing claims against BP in Texas state court for negligent misrepresentation, business disparagement and defamation related to the April 20, 2010, Macondo incident. Halliburton has also moved to amend its claims against BP in the multi-district litigation in New Orleans, Louisiana, to include fraud.

Halliburton shares are down 2.28% to $42.04.
