Energy shares are down in mid-day trading while crude oil futures slip to remain below $100 a barrel.

Light, sweet crude oil for January delivery traded down $1.71 to $97.70 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was down $0.01 to $2.91 a gallon while natural gas was down $0.05 to $3.26 per million British thermal units.

In mid-day energy news, shares of ConocoPhillips ( COP ) are down while Reuters reports the U.S. oil major made a find of natural gas in the southern North Sea but that further tests are needed to determine if it is worth developing.

COP shares are down 2.6% at $70.11.
