Sector Update: Consumer

Consumer shares were generally higher in pre-market trade Monday.

In consumer stocks news, Tesla Motors ( TSLA ) said late Friday on its website the Tesla Model S drive unit warranty has been increased to match that of the battery pack. That means the 85 kWh Model S, our most popular model by far, now has an 8 year, infinite mile warranty on both the battery pack and drive unit. There is also no limit on the number of owners during the warranty period.

Moreover, the warranty extension will apply retroactively to all Model S vehicles ever produced.

And, Dollar General ( DG ) has introduced a proposal to acquire Family Dollar Stores ( FDO ) for $78.50 per share in cash in a transaction valued at $9.7 billion. The offer follows a $74.50 per share cash-and-stock proposal to acquire the discount retailer made by Dollar Tree ( DLTR ) on July 28.

Finally, Ryder System, Inc. ( R ), a provider of commercial transportation and supply chain management solutions, has been awarded a managed maintenance contract by Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc.

Under the contract, Ryder will provide maintenance and preventive maintenance services for Southern's heavy duty fleet of 2,200 tractors, trucks and trailers.
