Sector Update: Consumer

Consumer stocks are mostly lower this afternoon with shares of consumer staples companies in the S&P 500 sinking 0.8%. Shares of consumer discretionary firms in the S&P 500 are down about 0.6%.

In company news, Electronic Arts Inc. ( EA ) was up nearly 12% in late afternoon trading Friday and the video-game company today receiving a Buy recommendation and a $26 price target in new coverage at CRT Capital.

Earlier today, the of EA's more popular titles - Battlefield 4, Madden NFL 25 and FIFA 14 - all made the NPD Group's best seller list for 2013.

In other sector news,

(+) SONC, Increases stock buyback program by another $40 mln, with $69 mln now available for future share repurchases.

(-) RDEN, Warns Q2 earnings and revenue will miss analyst forecasts, with adjusted EPS in a range of $1.05 to $1.08 on between $415 mln to $418 mln - lagging the Capital IQ consensus looking for a $1.47 per share profit on $469 mln in sales.
