Operating Performance
Total revenue improved 6% year over year to $2.448 billion, but missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.461 billion. Segmental Performance
Corrugated Packaging Segment : Net sales in the segment rose 11% year over year to $1.7 billion in the quarter. Operating income surged 167% year over year to $196 million. Results were aided by higher selling prices and containerboard volume, partly offset by higher commodity and other costs.
Consumer Packaging Segment : The segment's net sales grew 2.5% year over year to $644.8 million. Operating income declined 9% year over year to $76 million as a result of lower selling prices, higher cost of virgin fiber and energy, partly offset by higher volumes and lower recycled fiber costs.
Recycling : Net sales in the segment fell 19% year over year to $274.6 million due to lower volume and pricing. The segment reported operating income of $2 million, down 9% from $2.2 million in the year-ago quarter.
Financial Position
Cash and cash equivalents increased to $42.3 million as of Jun 30, 2013, from $37.2 million as of Sep 30, 2012. Cash provided by operating activities were $270 million for third-quarter fiscal 2013 compared to $203.6 million in the year-ago quarter. Debt-to-capitalization ratio improved to 43% as of Jun 30, 2013 from 50% as of Sep 30, 2012.
Shipment
Corrugated Packaging segment tons shipped increased by 102,000 tons over the prior-year quarter due to increased production from operating improvements and reduced maintenance outage tons. Consumer Packaging segment paperboard and pulp shipments increased about 15,000 tons from the prior-year quarter.
Our Take
RockTenn's strong earnings growth reflects continued improvements in its operating performance and higher containerboard and box pricing. Rock-Tenn's investment in box plants, installation of new standard corrugated box operating system and increase in domestic and export pricing will help to improve its profitability.
