Retail sales, earnings on calendar

This week's calendar focuses on retail sales tomorrow and several data reports on Thursday.

There are no economic releases today, but Concho Resources and Gogo report earnings this morning. McKesson, MBIA, Rackspace Hosting, and Penn Virginia follow in the afternoon.

The Commerce Department's retail-sales announcement is the first significant economic event tomorrow morning. Export and import prices come out at the same time. EnCana releases quarterly results in the morning, while Fossil and Two-Two Interactive report after the closing bell.

Wednesday brings producer prices, mortgage applications, and crude-oil inventories. Deere, Macy's, Plug Power, Sony, and SodaStream issue results in the morning. Cisco Systems is the big name reporting at the end of the day, along with Agilent Technologies and ExOne.

Thursday is the most active session. Some of the morning's headlines focus on consumer-related news: initial jobless claims, consumer prices, and the NAHB's homebuilder-sentiment index, plus earnings from Wal-Mart Stores and Kohl's.

The New York and Philadelphia branches of the Federal Reserve publish their regional-activity indexes, while the national Fed releases industrial-production data. Natural-gas inventories round out the economic news.

Thursday afternoon also features quarterly results from Applied Materials, Autodesk, J.C. Penney, Nordstrom, and Voxeljet.

Friday brings the conclusion to Indian elections, which could affect emerging-market sentiment. Housing starts, building permits, and consumer sentiment will also be released. Canadian Solar and Constellium report earnings.
