Retail sales and Cisco Systems' earnings are the main items on today's agenda.
At 8:30 a.m. ET, the Commerce Department is expected to report a gain of 0.3 percent in retail sales last month, on both an overall basis and excluding automobiles. That would compare with gains of 0.2 percent and 0.4 percent in June.
Chinese and European industrial production are due earlier but will probably have less impact. Weekly mortgage applications are the first item in the United States at 7 a.m. Crude-oil inventories is also due at 10:30 a.m.
Deere, Macy's and Canadian Solar are the main companies to announce quarterly results in the morning. While CSCO is the big name in the afternoon, NetApp, Vipshop, ExOne and Voxeljet also report. The last two are members of researchLAB's volatile 3-D printing group .
Tomorrow brings European economic growth and U.S. jobless claims. Earnings also shift toward retailers like Wal-Mart, Kohl's, Nordstrom and J.C. Penney. Technology heavyweight Applied Materials is on the docket in the afternoon.
