The Republican candidates on China: Romney most hawkish so far

It certainly is an interesting battle between the leading Republican candidates for President. Perhaps what is of most interest to EmergingMoney.com readers is the candidates' thoughts and possible future policy toward China.

It is a bit worrisome that the leading Republican candidate Mitt Romney seems to have China in his crosshairs. His rhetoric on China's trade and currency policies have gone further than the other candidates in blaming China for the United States' economic woes, repeatedly calling China a "cheater" for manipulating the value of its currency.

The other candidates are mishmash of experience and opinion on China. Herman Cain seems to have little expertise in foreign policy matters. At the other extreme, Jon Huntsman was President Obama's first ambassador to China and speaks fluent Mandarin.

The other Republicans in the field -- Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann -- fall somewhere in between Cain and Huntsman. No real policy statements from them have emerged yet.
