PPG Industries to Provide Gulfstream Windows, Assemblies - Analyst Blog

PPG Industries Inc. ( PPG ) has announced that its aerospace products and services business - aerospace transparencies group - has been selected by Gulfstream to supply windshields, side cockpit windows and passenger-cabin window assemblies for the G500 and G600 business jets. These will provide greater performance for operators and maximum efficiencies for Gulfstream.

The passenger-cabin windows will utilize OPTICOR advanced transparency material for a quieter ambience and to maintain optical clarity. The windshields along with broad side cockpit windows will provide greater visibility. The passenger-cabin windows will have an outboard ply of Opticor advanced transparency material that is tremendously resistant to crazing. The Opticor advanced transparency material is manufactured at PPG's Sylmar, CA, aerospace transparencies plant.

PPG acoustic tests of the cabin windows showed that they were 16% bigger and they reduced sound transmission by about 20% more than the cabin windows for the GV jet. Also, these cabin windows have one-fourth as many parts as in the conventional ones, thereby reduces assembly time by more than half.

Both passenger-cabin windows and side cockpit windows are designed in a way that enable these to withstand more cabin pressure with less deflection, providing aerodynamic benefits and weight savings. This finally leads to a quieter, smoother flight and better fuel efficiency. The cockpit windows and passenger-cabin window assemblies will be produced at PPG's Huntsville aircraft products plant for delivery to Gulfstream's Savannah, GA, facility.

PPG Industries will provide SURFACE SEAL water-repellent coating to the heated glass windshields as the primary rain-removal system, which will enable Gulfstream to certify the aircraft without windshield wipers and reduce related drag and weight.

Last year, PPG Industries won the Gulfstream Supplier of the Year award for its transparencies produced in Huntsville and Sylmar and by its Ampaspace subsidiary in Casaletto Vaprio, Italy.

PPG Industries reported strong third-quarter 2014 results on Oct 16. The company's adjusted earnings for the quarter topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Profit surged on gains across major regions, especially Europe, and on the back of the company's cost-reduction initiatives. Revenues rose year over year but lagged expectations. The company expects its strong earnings performance to continue, going forward.

PPG Industries currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Other stocks worth considering in the diversified chemical space include Innospec Inc. ( IOSP ), Valhi, Inc. ( VHI ) and Kronos Worldwide, Inc. ( KRO ). All of these sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
