( NOK ) recently acquired Mesaplexx, a leading Australian radio frequency (RF) filter technology developer, in an attempt to boost the RF capabilities of its basestations. The financial terms of the contract have been kept under wraps. Nokia currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
The newly acquired technology will be integrated into Nokia's flagship Flexi range of basestations. The RF filter will allow the use of a single antenna for both transmitting and receiving data. This will also facilitate spectrum sharing within a specific geographical area.
Mesaplexx's advanced RF filters will help Nokia to improve the radio performance of its basestations, by enhancing capacity, reliability and efficiency of the network. In addition, Nokia expects the Mesaplexx technology to help reduce small cells form factor by 30% or more.
In Jul 2013, Nokia had entered into an agreement with content delivery network operator CDNetworks to accelerate the delivery of mobile content. Liquid technology is a software solution for network infrastructure that drastically reduces the need for dedicated hardware.
The liquid technology of Nokia is a software solution that shares network resources across all wireless and broadband networks. Therefore, carriers can now exploit their relatively underutilized basestations in the rush hours to ease network traffic congestion.
Some major customers of Nokia's Flexi range of basestations include VimpelCom Ltd. ( VIP ) and Chunghwa Telecom Co.Ltd. ( CHT ). Recently, Nokia announced its decision to add more location-aware capabilities to its basestations.
Nokia's collaboration with ChinaCache will help the former attain this objective through the enhancement of the company's liquid applications. Nokia is presently conducting trial runs with several wireless operators to test its liquid technology. Notable among them is SK Telecom Co. LTD. ( SKM ).
