There are not many better feelings than coming home on a Friday night from a long week of work, throwing on your sweats, opening a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, calling your friend to come over to your place, ordering takeout, and turning on your TV to binge watch the latest Netflix ( NFLX ) Original, such as the Emmy Award Winning House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, or some classic series such as Twin Peaks or the Twilight Zone.
Well, if you channel your inner couch potato as I do mostly every night, Netflix has developed a button called "The Switch" that once pressed, commences the binge watching experience. As Netflix explains, The Switch "turns on your TV and brings you right to Netflix, dims your lights, silences your phone, and even orders you food." Intriguing isn't it?
To summarize the process, the user gathers the materials in the list Netflix provides for construction - connects the device to your TV's infrared remote signal, home wireless network, and smart lighting system - gets the source code and programs the microcontroller - and enjoy.
The Switch is currently a prototype that Netflix unveiled at the 2015 World Maker Faire. The build-it-yourself concept of the device may put off many people not familiar with building a gadget with microchips and batteries. However, the button is targeted primarily to the millennial generation and tech savvy individuals whom like to "chill" and binge watch Netflix on a rainy night.
This super remote control appears to be a niche concept that primarily the truly dedicated Netflix binge watchers will embrace. Once it is out of its prototype stage and becomes more readily available to the public, The Switch appears to be a "boom or bust" gadget that will either be extremely successful or won't capture the attention of the mainstream population. Either way, The Switch is a really cool device that embodies the Netflix binge-watch experience. Go add some series to your list and get ready for a fun night at home.
