Major market averages were indicated to close sharply higher, bouncing back after suffering a dreadful Christmas Eve session on Monday.

Positive retail spending news helped send the market higher. Stocks were also boosted by comments from White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett, who said that he was confident President Donald Trump was pleased with the job Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was doing and that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's job was safe, according to an NBC News report. In late trading, the Nasdaq was up more than 5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 were both more than 4% higher.
