Our latest Nasdaq Artist in Residence is Ashley, @nyroamer. Growing up in Upstate New York, Ashley always dreamt of living in New York City. Now that she does, she is able to pursue her passion of photography in her beautiful photos of cityscapes, views, and buildings. We asked Ashley 5 questions about her inspiration for our Nasdaq Artist in Residence series:
What Ignites Your Ambition?
There's just so much! I believe you can find beauty in almost any surrounding, if you look closely enough. I've become particularly interested in seeking light (and shade). It can transform a normal, boring moment, when the sun hits "right," to an outstanding photographical moment. I'm constantly seeking the perfect "light."
Why is Instagram your medium of choice?
I started Instagram as a hobby, due to my interest in photography. I soon found so many outstanding, creative people, who shared my passion. I've gotten away from the "snaps" of my life I had previously posted and become interested in genuine photography. Instagram has provided me with a creative outlet, where not only can I post what I love, but where I am constantly surrounded by such talent. It's a great place to be!
What turned you on to photography and why do you love to photograph New York?
My father bought me a Nikon camera, so I started to shoot with it on a trip to Alaska. The rest is history! Instagram itself has certainly fueled my passion even more. I think NYC itself is the perfect medium- it's energetic, it's gritty, and it's a beautiful backdrop. There is never a dull moment in this city. I can't walk a step without seeing something or someone that I want to photograph. I feel very fortunate to live here, as it constantly inspires me.
What about the Nasdaq Tower inspires you?
It is in the crossroads of the world! You couldn't get a more action packed area surrounding the tower. It's the heartbeat of the world! One can't help but notice the soaring, shining glory (the tower) in Times Square. It's energetic, engaging, and one simply can't help but notice it.
Times Square is an iconic place to photograph, how did you find a way to capture it differently than other photographers before you?
Times Square is an energetic and magical place. One can't help but feel the energy (and crowds), but for me, I'm more interested in the crowds of people against the backdrop of Times Square. The small human scale, as compared to the large, illuminated billboards, is outstanding. It's always interesting to observe the facial expressions of tourists taking in their surroundings. The look of awe makes for a perfect picture!
