Monday Sector Laggards: Materials, Energy

Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Monday, shares of Materials companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 1.3% loss. Within that group, Newell Rubbermaid, Inc. (Symbol: NWL) and Dow Chemical Co. (Symbol: DOW) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 8.4% and 4.4%, respectively. Among the high volume ETFs , one ETF closely following materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLB), which is down 1.4% on the day, and down 9.50% year-to-date. Newell Rubbermaid, Inc., meanwhile, is up 10.89% year-to-date, and Dow Chemical Co. is up 14.60% year-to-date. DOW makes up approximately 11.7% of the underlying holdings of XLB.

The next worst performing sector is the Energy sector, showing a 0.8% loss. Among large Energy stocks, Southwestern Energy Company (Symbol: SWN) and Range Resources Corp (Symbol: RRC) are the most notable, showing a loss of 8.4% and 4.9%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Energy stocks is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLE ), which is up 0.3% in midday trading, and down 21.49% on a year-to-date basis. Southwestern Energy Company, meanwhile, is down 80.19% year-to-date, and Range Resources Corp, is down 59.21% year-to-date. Combined, SWN and RRC make up approximately 0.7% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
