Monday Sector Laggards: Energy, Utilities

Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Monday, shares of Energy companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 4.4% loss. Within the sector, Hess Corp (Symbol: HES) and Marathon Oil Corp. (Symbol: MRO) are two of the day's laggards, showing a loss of 12.2% and 5.9%, respectively. Among energy ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLE), which is down 4.0% on the day, and down 22.68% year-to-date. Hess Corp, meanwhile, is down 21.15% year-to-date, and Marathon Oil Corp., is down 24.04% year-to-date. Combined, HES and MRO make up approximately 2.0% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next worst performing sector is the Utilities sector, showing a 4.3% loss. Among large Utilities stocks, Consolidated Edison Inc (Symbol: ED) and CMS Energy Corp (Symbol: CMS) are the most notable, showing a loss of 5.8% and 5.7%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Utilities stocks is the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLU ), which is down 4.2% in midday trading, and up 1.22% on a year-to-date basis. Consolidated Edison Inc, meanwhile, is down 7.97% year-to-date, and CMS Energy Corp is up 5.04% year-to-date. Combined, ED and CMS make up approximately 5.7% of the underlying holdings of XLU.
