Mixed market results for Tuesday

U.S. markets are relatively flat in premarket trading . The S&P is unmoved at last check, and the Dow is up 0.03%. The Census Bureau report of 1,001K new housing starts fell short of expectations for 1,028k.

In Asia markets were mixed overnight, after data showed a 6% decrease in direct foreign investment in China. The Shanghai Composite was down 0.92%, though the Nikkei was up 0.29%.

European markets are up today with automakers leading the way. The FTSE is up 0.05%, and the DAX up 0.24%

Energy futures are down this morning. West Texas Intermediate crude oil is down $.52, and natural gas is unchanged. In metals, gold is down $10.30, while platinum is down $5.80. The Dollar is up versus the Euro and the Yen.

Medtronic, Inc. ( MDT ), GameStop Corp . ( GME ), and Delta Air Lines Inc. ( DAL ), and Micron Technology Inc. ( MU ) are on the rise today. Shire plc ( SHPG ), BT Group plc ( BT ), and BHP Billiton plc ( BBL ), and Caterpillar Inc. ( CAT ) are down.
