Microsoft (ticker: MSFT) and IPO contender Xiaomi have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on artificial intelligence in a rare technology pact of its kind between U.S. and Chinese companies.

The long-time technology partners have several things in mind, including integrating Cortana with Xiaomi's new smart speaker, Mi AI Speaker.

The companies reportedly are also discussing the use of Microsoft A.I. technology covering conversational A.I. and speech, and services such as Bing, Edge and Skype.

The Microsoft-Xiaomi accord, though not legally binding, is important. It offers each company the opportunity to establish business presence in a crucial international market in which it requires a strong local business partner.

And it is not alone: Samsung Electronics (South Korea: 005930) and Tencent Holdings (Hong Kong: 0700) said they will invest jointly in A.I. and games.
