Microsoft CorporationMSFT has launched its NewsPro app offering a news service that promises a personalized experience. Microsoft is pitching this as an app for work describing it as "hyper-relevant news for your work".
This free app, developed for iOS devices, is the outcome of experimental projects handled by the Microsoft Garage team.
At first glance, a Microsoft news app for iOS may seem irrelevant since Apple already has a very similar news service that iOS users might be using. But here are a few distinguishing features that one can get used to.
First, it allows you to sign in using your Facebook or LinkedIn IDs, so it can customize your content based on the interests you mention on social networks.
Second, users can also select other areas of interest, which have been referred to as "industries". These could be IT, Design, Real Estate, Education and so forth.
Third, users can "Like" or comment on stories like they do on social networks, which brings in a nice element of interaction.
Fourth, there is quick-load version called "Speedy Mode" that resembles a feature on SmartNews, which is another app for iOS.
Fifth, it is powered by Bing News.
While it is not a very original creation, this new app allows Microsoft to test the market for an interactive, news-focused product. If successful, it will help Microsoft grow its advertising revenue and reduce losses over at Bing.
